A second attempt at posting. Just as I was finishing an unwary key hit seems to have deleted the entire post with photos! This post may not be as comprehensive as the previous attempt....
As a few people have expressed an interest in seeing the remaining armies, here follows the other DBA forces, including the elusive Celts.
The armies were created with the idea of covering the known Roman world from around 100-30BC so covering from Marius to the Principate. They were also designed to cover all available options or armies in a given list so have more elements than a standard DBA army.
Romans - from the Freikorps 15 range designed by Dave Allsop - no longer available as they have been redesigned. Roughly 3x DBA armies - veterans of many battles and a couple of campaigns they are showing some wear and tear due to the brittle metal - lots of pilum need repair or replacement and the Pompeians have lost their eagle. The range included some excellent personality figures of Caesar, Pompey and Crassus.
The Barbarians - early Germans
The Spanish
Numidians - including King Juba who started life as a Mongol from Tabletop Miniatures and the elephant which was lurking in the Celt box...
In the same box were the Seleucid and Pontic scythed chariots.
The Celtic host - covering options and variants for Gallic, Galatian and Ancient British armies
Cavalry - some may be Germans
4WB - Gaestati, Solduri or Galatians - with or without clothes
3WB warriors - Gallic or British
Chariots, British LC and skirmishers
The Germans have yet to see a game IIRC and the Celts masquerading as Ancient British beat a Mongol army by maximising terrain. I'm now wondering if a Marian "Known World" campaign is an easier option....
I am happy to see that you persevered through this difficult time! My latest post on Zallaqah suffered a similar fate. I was reviewing my post before publication and hit a wrong key combination. The whole completed post vanished. Nothing could be resurrected. Fortunately, I still had a preview tab open so that I could reconstruct the post. I almost did not have the strength to rebuild but I did. Glad you did too!
ReplyDeleteSplendid array of armies. you should get them to the table for a game sometime. Dave Alsop was one of my favorite sculptors from the '90s when he sculpted for Old Glory. His figures had such character and animation. They still are a presence in many of my 15mm Napoleonic armies. I did not know that he sculpted for Feikorps 15's too.
A combination of some very nice armies you have there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter. I got really interested in the Marian / Caesarian Roman campaigns and discovered just how many enemies they fought against.

Thanks Jonathan. The air turned blue!
ReplyDeleteI'm contemplating making use of the painted figures, although I have yet to find the scenery box!
Dave Alsop designed the Platoon 20 and Freikorps 15 ranges and livid in Northern Ireland. He moved to the North East and founded Hotspur (later sold to MLR then FAA). He did a limited range of 20mm Swiss for Acorn (an offshoot of P20 / FK15). After Hotspur, he started designing for Old Glory before moving to the USA where he died. A great loss. I'm a big fan of his designs.

Great armies, I await the campaign with interest. You can’t beat ancients imho
ReplyDeleteAlan Tradgardland
Thanks Alan. Ancients used to be my main period until an unfortunate WRG 6th edition game. It wasn't the rules, but the way they were interpreted and played - to win at all costs. Abandoned ancients until DBA arrived.
DeleteNeil
So glad to hear you have recovered from 6th Edition trauma.

What lovely figures, I really like the Roman personalities esp Crassus and also King Jubas elephant! I'm afraid my Barbarian horde is just that, a horde who get used as everything from Britons to Germans via Gaul, some of them are even wearing trousers. I must do some Barbarian light cavalry though.
ReplyDeleteThanks Martin. IIRC the jumbo is Museum Miniatures, but they have switched to CAD for their figures so not sure if still available. The FK15 figures were full of character, especially the personalities.
DeleteOne of the peculiarities of WRG is PBs differentiation between close and loose order warbands. It seems to be based on the sketchy ancient sources but is inconsistent. Gauls are loose due to terrain, yet Germans and Helvetti who live in similar if even denser forests are close order?

Re posting woes, you will delighted to know that blogger yesterday decided to start loading photos in reverse order (again). A certain amount of cursing ensued, although I didn't lose the lot. It seems to be back to normal today.
ReplyDeleteBlogger is not the most user friendly platform; I just lost a reply through fat fingers on the tablet! My current frustration is being unable to comment properly ( if at all) or update the blog on the tablet due to inability to sign in. Discovered yesterday that the "drag photos" option works for me again - previously stopped working.

Fantastic looking armies Neil.
ReplyDeleteWillz.
Thanks Willz. Most were painted over 20 years ago!

Great looking armies Neil, good to see that they will fight again, look forward to seeing the battle reports.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie. It is indeed good to get some use from them. I have to be practical; if I want to do any gaming, it will have to be on the DBA scale.
DeleteNeil
NICE! Absolutely superb work on these!
ReplyDeleteThanks Darren. I'm hoping my painting skills haven't deserted me; these were painted over 20 years ago!

Those grizzled Roman veterans look great, Neil - as do all the other nations. Hope to see them on the table in '26, and indeed why not some sort of campaign game?
ReplyDeleteThanks David. There are a few things that are pushing me towards ancients at the minute; the Queen Laodike's war report as well as the SOA battle being Cunaxa - one of my favourite battles. Finding the photos and digging out the Celts and my DBA terrain box is just solidifying it.
DeleteThe reality is with available space, some sort of DBA sized game is all that is practical at present.

p.s. forgot to say I have a few Freikorps 15s of 1980s vintage in my 30YW collection, and have always liked them. Should have got more..
ReplyDeleteSadly the NI variety were rather brittle due to the metal used.
DeleteMost of the ranges are still available, from Quick Reaction Force and the Little Corporal although I have heard neither are good on the communication front. Sadly many of the ancients were redesigned when the moulds wore out - cavalry seem mostly to be originals, but most infantry are newer figures.
Neil
Wow!
ReplyDeleteYet more fantastic toys…
You should delve into the garage more often…😁
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly. Trouble is I need a week to recover after each "dig".....☺
