New Year......new distractions!

As we usher in 2026, like many bloggers, I'm looking back at what was achieved and where we go from here.

2025 seems to have been the year of lethargy / inability to focus and generally not get that much done.

One achievement and milestone is with the Soldier King project. 2025 saw me complete the armies of Waldow, Sinistria and Dupanen and add a cavalry brigade to Bravance, Argozia and Hrvatska to bring them up to parity with Arcadia, having managed to recalculate the army size and income. A tranche of reinforcements for Estavia await paint, the "rebels" / militia figures are part converted, which just leaves the Electoral forces to be boosted - to whatever will fill the boxes.

Sadly, I don't have anywhere to play with them at present! I also have numerous card/paper building to assemble and more importantly store...

Storage and clutter are a big problem and finding things is becoming a nightmare. As the offspring show no intention of flying the nest, until retirement, I cannot see much changing....

This has led to a revaluation of current projects and possibly more distractions. But first, a quick look at what else was going on. This year end saw me  escape illness although not lethargy, being exhausted from work. Little progress on flat Italian Wars, although I did read another couple of books on Pavia, and the main focus this year has been on 20mm Desert war with lots of modelling. The Jordanians for the 1967 Arab-Israeli war got some work as well.

At the end of the year, I dug out my old 15mm ancients, created for DBA and have spent my time off digging out figures and after a major excavation in the garage, my DBA terrain box. The realisation hit me, that at present I am limited to a 2' x 3' playing area, so we are looking at smaller scales, smaller armies or skirmish games if I want to actually play.

This set off a lot of cleaning up of 15mm Hellenistics with the vague idea of a Syrian War campaign. However, digging out painted figures has modified things slightly; I'm now contemplating something involving the Marian Roman armies and this has led to a modification. I can still scratch the Helenistic itch by working on Ptolemaics that took part in the Alexandrian War as part of the Civil War involving Caesar. This gives plenty of scope with the rivals Cleopatra VII v Ptolemy XIII with Arsinoe thrown into the mix of Achillas, the eunuch Gannymedes, remnant Gabinine legionaries, rioters etc.

Rediscovery of the Celts has got me looking at Caesar's Gallic war (coupled with a re-read of his accounts) - this was something I was planning all those years ago. While musing, I remembered I had a copy of the Decision Games Mini Game:

https://shop.decisiongames.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1701

Ideal for conversion to DBA and as it is card-driven, good for solo.

My thoughts have also turned to the possibility of smaller scales for say Western Desert WW2. I'm undecided on this as I have never really "got on" with say 1:300th after some unfortunate experiences in formative years, although I can see the benefit. That said, I have lots of 15mm stuff and Martin Rapier https://tgamesweplay.blogspot.com/ seems to manage games on a small area....although not quite as cramped as 3x2 foot!

Maybe I need to become a microscale gamer.....

  2. Nothing wrong with beginning a New Year with New Distractions! I wager many of us are in a similar boat taking on water and bailing as fast as we can to simply stay afloat. Now, De Bello Gallico, I remember translating that one in second year Latin 50 years ago. Wow! That was a very long time past!

    Happy New Year, Neil!

    1. Thanks Jonathan. My version is a translation as my Latin is non-existent!
A Happy and prosperous New Year to you Jon.

  3. Happy New Year! I'm pondering a return to 15mm ancients... And a major rebasing project...

  4. Thanks Andy and a Happy New Year to you too.
Cannot face rebasing even though I'd prefer Impetus sized bases!

    1. Go on! Do it! Impetvs-sized bases are the best.

    2. As much as I love the idea, the thought of rebasing makes me run for the hills......

  7. Happy New Year, good luck on the rationalization of the collections. Pick a monthly theme perhaps and get a good feel for what ,if anything needs painting, basing, reinforcement. Then if the buy, sell trade kicks in. at least you know what you have.

    1. Thanks Joe and Happy New Year. All that sounds far too organised for a butterfly like me! ☺

  10. A good review and thoughts on the future projects, looking forward seeing where it all takes you. I am thinking of doing a few smaller scale projects but only thinking about it so far! I always like to see WW2 in smaller scales but don;t know if i could do anything with it, be interested to see if you go for it. Anyway all the best for the New Year to you and yours and looking forward to seeing what 2026 brings.

    1. Thanks Donnie and a Happy New Year. TBH, the WW2 micro-armour goes around and around as an idea. The problem is quality and availability; Heroics & Ros have all you need but are mixed quality, but relatively cheap. GHQ score on the quality but are expensive and almost unavailable. Scotia have started replacing with 3D prints of unbelievable quality, but don't have a complete range. Bacchus - incomplete. 1:144 incomplete and becoming expensive, 1:200 mostly complete range but very mixed quality. After going around I normally just concentrate on the 1:72!

  11. Happy New Year Neil. If you pick the right ground scale you can do huge battles in a small space, I did the paired battles of Waterloo /Wavre on a 'table' 24" x 18" using the original version of Horse, Foot and Guns. My regular One Hour WW2 games are on a 3x3 though, so larger than the area you have available.

    1. Happy New Year Martin. Yes you are of course correct. I guess what I'm after is a scaled down "footprint" for the models; DBA works here with a 40mm x 15mm stand potentiality representing 1000 or more men.
I note Chris manages to get NQM games into a small area.

  12. It's been great to see your painting/modelling progress, even if no games - keep it up!
A couple of suggestions for limited space (i) how about using 'Commands and Colors' for Ancients, replacing blocks with figures/bases? The C&C board itself could fit small units, or perhaps use a hex terrain system for slightly larger hexes..
(ii) For WW2, 'Not Quite Mechanised' seems to allow 'large' games on not-large tables ( I admit I haven't read or played them myself). Martin's recent games on surprisingly small tables are also quite inspiring.
DBA is obviously a good idea!

    1. Thanks David. Sadly there hasn't been ANY painting in the last three weeks, despite my plans. Dark grey days and lethargy, followed by not wanting to start something to have to pack it away.....
I'd thought of CnC Ancients; if DBA doesn't work they may be the alternative. I'd also considered NQM, but may work on Megablitz units. The idea is to play a Crusader game via email, using the GDW "Double Blind" game of that name which works a bit like a "back to back" game. The idea is to play the combats as wargames.

  13. New Distractions?
    I would say perfect Distractions…
I too have been putting a Punic/Hellenistic/Pyrrhic collection together… The intention is for a group of interesting and colourful forces that can fight or ally with each other and give ,most importantly entertaining games…
DBA certainly sounds like a good set of rules for what you are doing…
I still refer to their army lists when starting an ancients project.
    1:300 scale???
    How about 10mm…
I bought a load of 10mm WW1 an age ago with the intention of using them for an “Invasion of 1910” type game…
They have just been rediscovered during my building renovations…
I forgot how good they look… You have the table space but also the detail….
A Happy New Year and All the Best

    1. Thanks Aly. A happy new year to you.
The wars between the Ptolemies and Seleucids and their internal dynastic struggles seem tailor made for wargames campaigns.
DBA are interesting. There's more subtlety been introduced; I had not appreciated they grew out of what was learned from DBM and DBMM.
I have debated 1:144 - there are some fantastic models and figures, but the footprint is not that much smaller than 15mm / 1:100. The idea behind 1:300 is to increase the limited table space and be able to reduce move distances etc and turn a 3' x 2' into 6' x 4'.
