"Wo ist Waldow?"* A parade

*Not the German equivalent of "where's Wally" but something I rather imagine the denizens of the Soldier King world to say - a rather obscure Grand Duchy in the East / South East. A non- Electoral pair of provinces surrounded by powerful neighbours.

The Archduke, Xenophon Amadeus Tauben, Grossherzog von Waldow has no heir or family and while pious is also radical and misanthropic; I can see his dominions being a prime candidate for invasion. Therefore, the full resources of the duchy have been used to create a reasonable army.

The Archduke

His senior generals Von Stauffen and Von Selters

Minor nobility division / column commanders

Cavalry: Cuirassiers, Dragoons, Chevaux Leger

Infantry - named for the colour of waistcoats and trousers - Weiss, Gelb and Blau

Light troops

Artillery

The army arrayed

Waldo ist hier!

I have to say I was sick of the sight of both colours by the time I'd finished!

I've found restricting to three or four colours ties an army together.
With the blue and yellow, you need to get the shade of blue that works with the yellow.

  6. Nicely done Neil! You have the correct blue and yellow going there. Nice back ground on your new province as well.

The uniforms were heavily influenced by the German units in French service as well as Swedes.
Waldow was going to have a smaller army until I realised the risk of war is quite high, relations (determined by dice throws) with neighbouring powers were antagonistic to hostile.

  7. Thanks MJT.
I didn't realise how long it took to finish one of these armies, normally doing it over an extended period.

As an "Imagi-Nation" better thought of as "influenced by"....

The GDW Soldier King game takes place on a continent(?) Or more prob large island.
This is another "non-game" nation to provide more challenge to conquering territory.

  9. Neil;
I was having the same silly "wo bist Waldo?" when I was looking at this Duchy. I like the idea of combining the two into one state. Looking at starting this one up soon but maybe with red as the colour instead of blue. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Eric,
No problem. The beauty of Soldier King is that you can develop it how you want. I chose blue and yellow just because I was running out of ideas for uniforms!

    1. Thanks David. I think previously, I worked on an army over an extended period; while this one was painted constantly over about a month. The basing and finishing took another week. Consequently, I think I was getting sick of the sight of them!
